Friday afternoon rush hour, flight from Pemba, approaching Zanzibar

from the air, Pemba, Zanzibar

I love the way this shows an island with water running through it - in the middle of a river (or estuary), on an island, in the Indian Ocean

Stone Town waterfront viewed from Pange sandbank, Zanzibar

Quay jumping, ETC waterfront, Stone Town, Zanzibar

Friday afternoon rush hour, Paje beach, Zanzibar

Fireflies (at night), Muungoni, Zanzibar

Yes, I know the background looks like daytime, but this is what you get when you leave the shutter open for a long time. The dark shape in the centre is a hut made from a bush wood frame and panels of plaited palm leaves (mukuti).

At the end of a long dirt road, Charawe, Zanzibar

after a jolly long cycle ride along a jolly hot coralite road in the midday heat we reach the humble but happening village of Charawe - "just like Zanzibar used to be 20 years ago" - except this is Zanzibar today! ...and then a few hundred metres further and we are at the end of the road on the edge of the delightful Chwaka Bay (at high tide). Time for a rest in the shade of the baobab.
